Here are some tips and tricks that will help you while playing Maidtown Madness...
Want to smash through traffic with ease? The city bus and Freightliner Century is what you need. Although a little slow, these vehicles can take a lot of abuse. Keep in mind that the Frightliner can be hard to handle.
Don't worry about cops chasing you. They don't do anything. You can even stop your car and they'll just stop in back of you with the siren on.
Bridges are easy to jump. The only time I ever sank was when I was going over with the Freightliner Century are 15mph. In some games the bridges are always up, in other they're always down.
Watch out for Al. You can be stopped at a traffic light and they will still bash into you (plus scream out "What are you doing? Kind of stupid).
If you pick up a cop or two on your "cruise through the Windy City" lead them to Soldier Field (the football stadium). Go in one of the entrances. The cops usually don't follow you in. You can then make your get away without them knowing where you've gone. They'll just wait outside for you to come out again.
You don't lose the cops by doing this. It's still very fun to do. When you leave the cops outside Soldier Field, go out another exit and go around to where the cop is. Make sure to speed to get his attention. He'll turn around and chase you again. (Thanks to Rebellius for those last two tips).
The cops can be a little stupid, but I have found how they work. They will continue to chase you until they wreck your car. But, remember you can also bang them up too. Get them with a good vehicle, such as the city bus, and they'll loose they're tires and shut up.
Here's a way to jump the highway wall and get on top of buildings: Turn the physics realism all the way down this will make it very easy to jump those buildings.
Want to remove the trailer from the Freightliner? Press F5 to remove it, F4 to re-attach. (Midtown Madness patch required)
Wanna fancy your Subaru through corners like the Dakar-guys? Here's the trick: Slow down to 70-100mph (depending on the space you have). Steer into the corner (no throttle) and let the car under steer (=front wheels drifting to the outside of the turn). Then squeeze the throttle and watch your back break as your front wheels regain grip. Gently steer back to stay on track. Remember not to lock the wheels when braking or you 'll do some beautiful figures before hitting the wall. (Tip by Dieter)
Want to knock your racing pals out of the way? Just hit them with the front of your car just to one side of the back of there car and hit the gas, they will spin out of your way. But be careful they don't drag you with them.
If you wanna have some monster truck fun? Well, Download bigfoot. find some cops. Go to the baseball diamond crash'em and then push'em into the center (better find 2 or 3 ) and ram'em have fun (it is easier to do the code Showme Cops (its faster)
Use the handbrake to spin your car sideways before an imminent large scale crash. This way you'll save your engine which is the most important part of your car. Although this works great in a game like Midtown or Carmageddon, it is not a good idea to hit things sideways in real life!
The computer controlled cars know what the civilian cars will do up to a certain level. The AI is programmed to "anticipate" the actions of the civilian traffic so that it would be easier for it to navigate through the city. Keep this in mind while you race: If you scare the traffic into sudden and dramatic moves, the opponent AI will get confused and possibly crash. This also works for other obstacles. If you bring down a street light, the AI will try to bust straight through the debris even though it will hurt bad.
Smashing through the scenery is not a good idea. It's fun to watch, but every hit gives your car more damage in races.
Folks, I've just jumped from a parking trailer across the river, midtown, where the three river meet. The trailer is set to the end of a South/North road. (Tip by Elio)
Take the new Kawasaki Bike. Hold it in reverse right into a building. (over 60 MPH) Make sure you hit the building on a bit of an angle. If you do it right, you will climb half way up the building and go flipping off. Its pretty cool. (Tip by M. Heidman)
If you drive along next to a building (fast) and with no realism you will drive up the wall! (Tip by InfoTech1)
This tip is to go up on the Wrigley Building...You should use Ferrari and go strait...go about 200 miles per hour....and when u see bridge.....steer a little to the right...then when your on the bridge.. steer to the right...then you should fly and land on the building!!! (Tip by SWT_Boss)
Ever wonder what the 2 ramps are for out front of McCormic place? Il tell ya, go up to the highway, come down at the ramp at about 130-140 MPH, when u get a little bit before the middle of the ramp, turn a little bit towards the building, if done right u should be on McCormic place!!..when I did this, I couldn't drive up there, I got stuck! (Tip by TI_Jaguar)
Wanna know how to get on Dearborn station??..go all the way to the 'L' nearest to the bridge, turn around, come towards Dearborn station at about 130-140 MPH, when u get to the stoplight closest to Dearborn station, turn into the building on the right as hard as u can and POW!! you fly up on the roof of Dearborn station (NOTE: physics realism must be all the way turned down) (Tip by TI_Jaguar)
Wondering how to drive in the grass outside of the freeway??...ok, go to china town, come down the road with the onramps/off ramps, go under the highway, steer into the right wall as hard as u can and you will fly over the wall, into the grass (NOTE: physics realism must be all the way turned down) (Tip by TI_Jaguar)
Go to ~su019454/default.htm"http://home-1.wolmail.nl/~su019454/default.htm it is full of tips for wall jumping and driving on top of buildings. It has many good tips, they even include illustrations, recomended cars, and screenshots to understand the tips even more. Great page to have even more fun with the game
Ok, can't win races? Here's a tip. Take your car and when he says GO get the the front of your car near the back of the enemies car. Turn a little ways toward the enemy. He should spin out and make a turn. It works, too. I recomend the Subarban or the Tahoe. (Tip by wInNeR)
its called the pendulum in rally.
it is a way to take a corner at high speed without using the handbreak.
1)as you approach the bend, turn slightly to the opposite side(e.g. if you want to turn right then you turn left here).
2)then swing the steering wheel towards the corner, then immediately turn it away from the corner and hold, your car should no be as if its skiding, now all you have to do is line it up
it may need a bit of practice before you actually get it right, this will not work in speeds of over 100
Pick the Ford Mustang Fastback and set the Physics Realism to the lowest possible. If you go between 100-140 miles per hour and turn real hard and hit anything bumpy (a sidewalk) or anything off level the car will either slide on two wheels or it will go flying and flipping. (Tip submitted by Michael)
One of my favorite things do is to go the bus depot (located next to the John Hancock building) and push the AI's into it and make a used car lot. Some of the AI's may try to leave in the process of pushing them but once there in there they won't move. I recommend using the City Bus. (Tip by Driver)
When you use the cheat "/postal" and you are on a highway or a busy road and a copper is chasing you just fire post boxes and all the traffic collides so the cops can't go through! (Tip by Jonathan Kipp)
Shortcuts:
1. McCormick Place -- This open building allows you to zip right through, even though it's not marked on the map. There are a few loading docks to fly across, as well as two intentionally propped ramps outside along the southeastern wall.
2. Open Field -- These open grassy areas are great for performing high-speed turns and throwing off anyone on your tail. You don't want to brake on the slippery grass as you can spin out rather easily. From this area, you can quickly head in towards Chinatown, up along Lake Michigan or hit the freeway going west.
3. Soldier Field -- There are three entrances into Soldier Field, east, west and south. Make sure you're lined up perfectly before trying these doorways at full speed. Many a player in Cops and Robbers meet their doom trying to navigate these tricky little doorways.
4. Meigs Field -- The airport offers three things: a nice location to view the flybys by the big jets, a raised platform with two ramps and some open space to lose those persistent cops or antagonistic players in Cops and Robbers.
5. Adler Planetarium -- This little building has a passageway right through the middle. Frequently, the gold in Cops and Robbers will be located on the side of the planetarium facing the water. Come flying through the breakaway wall at full speed and fly straight through, letting the back wall do the breaking for you. Sure, you'll gather some damage but you also gain some time as well. In the area between the planetarium and the museum, you'll find another ramp. If you're doing breakneck speed in the Panoz, you can clear any traffic on the main road in front, but you'll probably get some damage as well.
6. Tunnel -- There is a tunnel with an entrance on what would be Harrison Street, with the other entrance southeast of Dearborn Station.
7. Field Museum -- This location offers two stairway ramps; one at the north end and the other at the south end. Flying up these ramps at an angle will launch you into the air and hopefully force an opponent who is following, to misjudge and wreck into the Museum.
8. Dearborn Station -- The Station itself is not the draw here but the open area and trees surrounding the Station. You can maintain a high rate of speed while weaving through the trees. Why weave through the trees? So those Terminator 2-style cops will take themselves out by accident.
9. Alleyway -- If you sweep around Dearborn Station, then fly west and the cops are still on your tail, there is an alleyway opening heading north. Hit it dead on, sending the boxes flying, and maybe the cops won't be so lucky. This is also a great path from the Sears Tower to get to the southern freeway exits.
10. Construction Yard -- Try smashing through either the northwest or southeast walls. These walls are darker than the rest.
11. Breakable Window Glass -- There is glass on both the south and east sides of the corner of this building allowing you to fly through it and not lose too much speed through the turn. Oh, you'll get damaged, and you really can't see what the traffic situation is around the corner so it is a bit of a gamble...but, hey, you're driving a rental!
12. Stairways -- These stairways don't do too much but give you a place to climb, while trying to turn quickly and fly back down. Why? For the heck of it, or to try to get one of the cops to take themselves out.
13. Stairways -- Same as number twelve above.
14.Tunnel -- This sweeping S-shaped tunnel is a great diversion and not really a necessity for Checkpoint Race: Beetle Blast-A-Thon. Race it? Find out for yourself.
15. North Bank River Alley -- Okay, so this one is marked on the map. It's narrow, tricky and a handful when a gaggle of autos are trying to run you out of the way. Around the Wrigley Building are a set of alleys which are good to be aware of because if you can quickly make the ninety-degree turns at speed? Chances are the cops won't.
16. River-Crossing Jump -- So we've all got a little Evil Knievel in us, just hopefully not the broken bones to match. With this westward facing jump, do a daredevil-style jump across the river. It's a great way to lose any cops on your tail and it looks cool, too. Of course, you need to be doing about 130 miles per hour and hit it dead on, so you land on the street on the other side and not in someone's living room.
17. Tunnel - Alley Combination -- More of a short roadway through a building than a true tunnel, this path is perfect for keeping the RPMs churning high while heading straight into Chinatown.
18. Spacious Area -- Yeah, doesn't sound like much but this building is one of my key areas for pulling ninety or one hundred eighty degree turns. The open area around the building allows me to keep my speed up while pulling a sweeping turn. Don't overlook the importance of this area in multiplayer.
19. Another Spacious Area -- Again, another place to keep up the speed while making a turn. Burn this location in your brain!
20. Sears Tower -- Nothing special, just more room around to pull those moves that only you can!
21.Non-River-Crossing Jump -- Why is this jump here? No idea? you can't jump the river this way. Even at max speed, you'll end up sleeping with the fishes. If you want to try it, you'll need to go up the alley (#22) and partway into the tunnel (#23) and then come flying back, hoping no traffic is in your way and that you pull off the final turn onto the ramp perfectly? And you'll see that? You go really? Nowhere.
22. Cross Alley -- This cross-shaped alley is essential for victory in the Checkpoint Race: Beat The Bridges.
23. Daley Plaza -- The building with the red sculpture? That's the one. It's a nice open space to fly around and keep the speed up while hopefully watching your opponents impale themselves upon the red angular pieces of the sculpture.
24. Can You Wrap It To Go Please? -- This mall doesn't normally allow drive-through shopping, but I'm sure they'll make an exception in your case. Just don't get caught. The entrances are at the north and south ends of this building. Just make your own doorway through the plate-glass windows.
25. Art Institute -- There is a pathway that runs north-south through the middle. This is an essential pathway for victory in the Checkpoint Race: Soldier Sneaker. Just be aware of the tree right outside the south end as it can bring you to a quick unwanted stop when doing 120 MPH.
26. Navy Pier -- My favorite locale for shaking the local heat? There are several cross-streets and a raised parking platform with two separate ramps to get to it. When several cops and/or opponents are making your driving experience intolerable, weaving in and out of traffic can quickly bring any pursuers to a halt.
27. Tunnel Of Donuts -- This tunnel differs from the others in that it has a central area where you can quickly turn around if necessary. It's also a nice place to go to get uptown quickly.
28. Breakable Window Glass -- Another glass window on the south and west sides of the building allows you to smash right on through. Some damage? Some car collisions? Maybe some pedestrians getting in the way? That's their problem, not yours.
29. Chicago Water Tower -- The open area around the structure gives you some high-speed turning area and a nice place to swing the big rigs around. The water tower is one of the few building to survive the Great Chicago Fire.
30. Three-Piece Alleyway Collection -- Only the centerpiece of the alley shows on your map but the northern and southern sections are there in the virtual city. When racing the Checkpoint Race: Beetle Blast-A-Thon, ramming the truck northwards through here is an effective way to trash your competition.
31. John Hancock Center -- The only thing of notice here is the walkway that goes into the ground and pops out again. This is a location where the gold will get placed occasionally in Cops and Robbers multiplayer games.
32. Wrigley Field -- If you feel like trying to run the bases at eighty miles per hour, go ahead. Two slim entrances can make the price of admission a bit high, but it's a great place to throw your pursuers off the scent.
33. Dual Stairs -- Much easier to go down than up. If you do need to go up them, make sure to use the sidewalk. Don't worry about the pedestrians, they can take care of themselves.
34. Shedd Aquarium -- And here's a new one we missed! The aquarium has doors that you can break down on the west side. Head through the curving passage and out the other side!
